Hello, my name is Alicia McDermott and I am the STEM Lab Instructional Assistant at Estes.  I am so excited to join the Estes Rams family.

I live in Fletcher with my wonderful husband and two children.  We moved to WNC from Northern Illinois several years ago and love living in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.  I enjoy spending time outdoors with my family, playing board games and macrame.

I graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2002 with a B.S. in Business Communications and Family and Child Studies.  I have spent the past several years teaching Preschool at Around the Son Preschool in Asheville.  I am passionate about project-based learning and allowing students the opportunity to discover new things with their hands.

The STEM program at Estes is an excellent way for students to engage in hands-on-learning through STEM challenges.  Students have 4 weekly rotations in the STEM Lab each school year.  We work through the Engineering Design Process (ASK, IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE & IMPROVE) to complete a STEM challenge that connects Science standards students are learning in the classroom.

We have a lot of fun and I can not wait to work with your students.
