A student shares information about a country to classmates.

🌎 William W. Estes Elementary School third graders took a trip around the world earlier this month with a cultural heritage project that saw students presenting what they’ve learned in a fun, memorable way.

Each student chose a country based on family heritage or personal curiosity, and on April 3, they presented their findings to their classmates. They covered food, pop culture, language, geography, famous figures, family histories, and other unique aspects of their chosen countries. On April 4, they made their presentations to family and friends during an open house.

“The cultural heritage project provides students and families the opportunity to connect their learning from school to home with our unit on immigration,” said third grade teacher Leigh Salley. “Students are eager to share their own family history or learn about another culture.”

“When students connect learning to their life and other texts, students have agency in their learning and master the ability to guide their learning,” added fellow third grade teacher Justin Lovelace.

Many of the kids dressed in traditional clothing associated with their countries, and some even brought food to share. They were excited for their time in the spotlight and a chance to celebrate global learning.

“I liked the cultural projects because you were able to show your family history with everyone,” said third grader Rowan.

“I liked learning about the many beautiful places and the famous people that lived there,” added third grader Cristi.
